Origins of the ANDOBA DOUBLE FITA STAR

View of field from balcony

The origin of the ANDOBA Double FITA Star can be traced back to 1990.

The event was started by Houston-Robb (Robbie) from AC Delco and Reg Press from Andover Archers in 1990, on was held on the old Goodship Rugby Ground at Walworth Industrial Estate. The first event took place on the 27th and 29th July of that year, in glorious hot and sunny weather. Just what we expect in Andover!

The 1991, 92 and 93 events took place on what is now the football fields at Walworth Industrial Estate, before the event moved to Andover Archers new facilities in 1994, where it's been held ever since.

The first event was (and still is) run as a combined event by Andover Archers together with Old Basing archers. The two day event attracted over 250 archers, from across the country, and was the largest gathering of archers in Hampshire for 5 years.

Five star shoot for Andover

2 Day Grand Prix, Five star competition

In September 1993, Andover archers moved into their new facilities at the new T.V.B.C Sports Centre at Foxcotte Park in Charlton. The new 3.5 acre site, with new purpose built club house being the perfect site and surroundings to hold the sixth Double FITA Star competition.

In 1994, and every year since the shoot actually takes place on the adjacent Rugby Club field, with their clubhouse and balcony as the backdrop. The Rugby very kindly open up their entire facilities to us for the weekend, including changing rooms, showers, bars and the full extend of the catering facilities, whether it be for a burger in a bun, or the full 14oz steak.

We at Andover archers open up our own clubhouse for the weekend, to provide an area and facilities for briefing the administrative staff, Judges, as well as the working parties.

We also turn over about half of our outdoor range area for the use of competitors caravans, and tents for the weekend stay. Camping can be arranged and book direct through the Event Secretary or on the Entry Form for the event. Don't leave it to late, pitches are normally booked very quickly, and there are only a limited number.  People have been known, and they do, start arriving on the Thursday morning before the shoot, to get that favourite spot!

The lower side of the outdoor range is prepared and set out as a practice range, a number of bosses are positioned at the shooting distances.

The two clubs will be holding the 18th event in 2007, and over the years it has gone from strength to strength. It is now probably one, if not the largest, two day FITA event in the country.

The 2007 shoot looks like being the biggest and best one yet, expecting nearly 300 archers. The new organising committee have secured a new sponsorship deal with one of the leading Archery suppliers in the country,
Merlin Archery
will be sponsoring the event for the foreseeable future. The changes will include some very nice raffle prizes, and a very nice first prize for each of the two days. It is hoped that we will be using approved Tyvek waterproof faces (not that we need them in Andover, it's always hot!) at all the distances. But, the most significant improvement will be the re-launch of the 'on-site' shop. Merlin Archery will be providing the full range of products over the two day period. So, for you archers with the last minute equipment failure, or those missing fletchings, or even that new bow, they'll have it covered!

Pictures of the 2006 shoot can be found in the photo gallery, and the picture below is of the shooting line (well most of it) taken from the balcony of the Rugby Club. I have it on good authority that the person behind the camera, was not at the bar at the time!
